сжатие, уплотнениеметоды и средства уменьшения объёма памяти, занимаемого данными, либо полосы пропускания и количества битов, необходимого для их передачи по линиям связи. Различают сжатие без потери данных (lossless compression) и с потерей данных (lossy compression). Сжатие без потерь используют для файлов программ, документов и баз данных. 3 lossy compression
сжатие с потерей данных, необратимое сжатиеудаление части данных при сохранении как можно большего объёма значимой информации. Поскольку изображения и аудиозаписи (аудиосигналы) исходно содержат некоторое количество шумов, то удаление дополнительных шумов не очень заметно влияет на качество воспроизведения, но это позволяет достичь очень больших коэффициентов сжатия (compression ratio). После декомпрессии качество восстановленного изображения и/или звука несколько ухудшается (в зависимости от коэффициента сжатия - чем больше сжатие, тем больше потери данных), хотя в некоторых пределах это может быть внешне и не всегда заметно.
